Today is a very proud day for me. BYU Soccer has began using Scan to sell tickets and season passes. It makes me so happy to see 2 things that I’ve worked so hard on, come together in a beautiful way. Here’s the link if you’d like to check it out for yourself : http://scan.me/7gj2fv
A Lite Introduction to Scan
Scan connects the real world with the digital universe through mobile scanning technologies like QR codes, bar codes, beacons, and more. There are 2 main parts to Scan, the website where any individual or business can create their own custom codes, and the mobile apps which enable users to quickly and easily scan any code. These codes can enable valuable actions such as a Like on Facebook, a Follow on Instagram, or even purchasing an item! I started Scan while a Freshman at Brigham Young University together with Ben Turley and Kirk Ouimet. Together, our endless hard work, tireless long nights, and many hard days have began to pay off. Since that time, the Scan team has grown to 7 more team members, raised over $8 million in funding, and our website and apps are being used by more than 50 million businesses and individuals around the world.
A Lite Introduction to BYU Soccer
I grew up in Alpine, Utah, a small town only 30 minutes from Brigham Young University. I have very early memories of my father taking me to watch the BYU soccer team play. Those guys were giants. They were amazing. They were my heroes. I grew to love soccer and always had a dream to some day play for BYU myself. That dream was crushed my 1st year at BYU when I tried out for the team and was cut on the final day. I took it really hard. I didn’t know what to do. Even though the next year’s tryouts seemed 100 years away, I began training for that far off day. After a year of training, conditioning, working out, and cold showers (that’s another story), I returned to tryouts. After 4 grueling days, the roster was posted. Just maybe, probably, definitely the most rewarding moment of my life to see my name on that list. That first year was a lot of time on the bench. But I continued to work my hardest. Mid-way through the following year I earned a spot in the starting lineup. And now, as our 2014 season is about to begin, I’m humbled and honored for my journey of progression to continue as my teammates nominated me as a team captain. BYU Soccer has changed my life, both on and off the field.
Balancing Scan and BYU Soccer
I take my opportunities and responsibilities very seriously for both Scan and BYU Soccer. I often get asked how I balance the two along with everything else in life. Is it crazy busy? Yes. Is it tiring? Definitely. Do I wish I had more free time? Obviously. Would I change anything about my situation? Not a chance. Hard work doesn’t feel like hard work when you love what you do and you understand what you’re working towards. If anything, I honestly feel like life is 100% easier for those that spend their time doing things they love. I know that sounds stupid obvious, but then why do some many of us spend so much of our time not pursuing our passions?
Above is a screenshot sample of my weekly calendar. Its mostly managed by my wife, Jessica. She is amazing. We do everything together. She makes this all worth it and enjoyable. She helps me keep on track, get all my many meals in me, and always have time with Dorothy. Having so much on my calendar means I need to sacrifice things like TV, gaming, naps, and such. But so much greater is my desire to travel, create, be healthy, and spend as much time as possible with my friends and family.
HOW Scan Helps BYU Soccer Sell More Tickets
Every season, team members of BYU Soccer have the opportunity to sell season passes and game tickets to help build the program. However, it had always been an awkward problem trying to collect payments for ticket sales. Whether promoting tickets online or offline, individual players could only accept cash or check. It was old and outdated and players needed to be there in person to collect. Scan solves these problems.
Using the Scan website, BYU created their own Scan to Pay checkout page. This gave them a custom QR code and a custom link, both which take users to a beautiful mobile friendly checkout page where buyers can quickly and securely pay with credit card : https://scan.me/7gj2fv?ne=1
Creating a custom Scan to Pay checkout page is easy and free! Both businesses and individuals can create their own. Girl Scouts of America used it to help Girl Scouts better sell cookies. Charity Water uses it to better collect donations. I personally have my own page for people that need to send me money (similar to Venmo but no app is necessary).
Season Opener : Saturday, April 12th!
